Can cervical decompression help prevent neck surgery?

drx9000c san francisco
DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

We have been treating neck pain in San Francisco for over 20 years now. About 7 years ago we began to include nonsurgical cervical decompression into our treatment protocols. The machine we use is the DRX9000c.

As chiropractors, when it comes to treating neck and back pain, we are always looking to achieve a favorable outcome with our hands…and for the most part this is what happens. However, there are times when “hands-on” does not work…or it doesn’t work good enough…or the patient is so sore and inflamed you can’t even lay your hands on them…what now…NECK SURGERY?

Well…that was our thought process 7 years ago. Now things are different…different because we have a next step…cervical decompression with the DRX9000c.

So cervical decompression can help prevent neck surgery?

YES!

I have actually had patients (many of them) that were scheduled for neck surgery, that decided to put it off and try spinal decompression first. Why?…to avoid neck surgery if possible. Did it work? YES…more often than not.

Here’s the deal…the DRX9000c is NOT a Magic Bullet. What it is is the most advanced medical technology available (that I know of)  for the nonsurgical treatment of neurovascular compression syndromes in the neck. Conditions such as herniated and bulging cervical discs, spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, and degenerative disc disease.

But it doesn’t work every time…just most of the time…and if you ask me…that’s a good enough reason to try it…as long as you qualify medically…not everyone does.

So yes…cervical decompression can help prevent neck surgery…absolutely…that’s one of our primary goals…and it’s why herniated and bulging disc patients seek us out.

Listen…you can always have neck surgery. But if you have any kind of cervical fusion surgery you will never be able to try nonsurgical cervical decompression…and that is a bummer.

I have had patients cry in my office when I told them this. I have had herniated disc patients with neck fusion say they would have the screws removed and come back. They were stuck and living out a nightmare. heck…at least try spinal decompression first (if you qualify).

It’s what I would do…and it’s also what I would have a loved one do. In fact…a close family member went through spinal decompression at my clinic and still had to have low back surgery…it was that bad. But at least she knows she tried.

When should you have an MRI of the Neck?

herniated disc san francisco
Cervical disc bulge on MRI

We have been treating cervical disc herniations at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Clinic since 1992. Most of the time we are the ones to refer a patient out for a cervical MRI, which is the gold standard diagnostic tool for herniated discs. And this is usually after the neck pain patient has had extensive medical evaluations. Go figure?

Almost every patient we refer for a cervical MRI turns out to have either disc bulges, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, or cervical disc herniations.

Our spinal decompression doctors are highly trained in examination procedures so they are able to zero in on herniated discs in the neck and back.

Here’s the deal though…Even though we may suspect a herniated disc in the cervical spine, it does not automatically mean we refer out for MRI. It depends on many factors…such as the patients age, over-all physical condition, and presenting symptoms…and functional impairment.

The reason for this is because many times even though a patient has bulging or herniated discs, they still may respond favorably to a short course of conservative chiropractic, exercise, and therapy.

However…if the condition is acute and severe, we will refer right away.

When one of our spinal decompression doctors in San Francisco refers for an MRI of the cervical spine, we have the films and report sent to us. Why? Because we have a next step at our clinic…Nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000c.

The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat cervical disc herniations, bulges, degeneration, stenosis, and facet syndrome.

So first we try gentle chiropractic, exercise, massage, and physical therapy. If there is no response we order and MRI of the neck. If there are positive findings we may recommend cervical disc decompression with the DRX9000c or refer out to an orthopedic surgeon (rare).

So maybe you need an MRI of the neck…maybe you don’t.

My recommendation is to find yourself a chiropractor that has a cervical spinal decompression machine and lots of experience using it. Chances are they will have a good relationship with a diagnostic facility and can prescribe an MRI if indicated.

If you live or work near downtown San Francisco you can visit our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center. To schedule a complimentary consultation call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post.

Cervical Decompression with the DRX9000c or Surgery?

Many patients that have been told they need neck surgery, are choosing to try cervical decompression with the DRX9000c first…why? Well, because neck surgery is much more risky than nonsurgical decompression, and the outcomes are not all that great. Plus, you cannot undo a cervical fusion.

DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

Once you have a cervical fusion, other treatment options are limited.  And, you will never know if cervical disc decompression with the DRX9000c would have worked…because you are now disqualified from treatment. We can’t perform decompression to a permanently fused spinal segment.

I once had a retired surgeon beg me to perform the treatment. The surgery had failed. He said he would have the hardware removed. He could only sleep upright…it was very sad.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that you can always have neck surgery. If nonsurgical cervical decompression fails to deliver results you are still whole and can try other options…including surgery.

The DRX9000c isolates on the specific areas of involvement and does the following:

  • Enlarges the disc space
  • Stretches the spinal ligaments
  • Repositions the herniated disc
  • Re-hydrates the injured disc
  • Strengthens  the spinal muscles

Does the DRX9000c repair every cervical disc herniation it treats?  NO…just most of them.

Will the DRX9000c help you? Maybe…but you have to qualify for treatment first and be willing to follow through with home care and exercises. Believe it or not…some would rather have surgery. Here…you fix me mentality.

Chances are if you are reading this blog you are searching for a nonsurgical solution for a herniated or bulging cervical disc. If so, you may have found it.

Neck Pain Relief with the DRX9000c

We were the first spinal decompression clinic in San Francisco to offer cervical disc decompression with the DRX9000c.  The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat disc herniations in the neck, and bulging discs without surgery.

drx9000c san francisco
DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

The DRX9000c cervical spinal decompression system can also treat degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, and cervical stenosis…often times when nothing else will.

When we first offered spinal decompression to our chronic neck pain patients in San Francisco, I was one of our first patients. I had suffered a disc herniation in my neck from an automobile accident. I could not believe the results. I have been fine since, but every so often I receive cervical decompression  just to make sure the herniation stays in check.

Many of our cervical disc patients have been told they need neck surgery. Neck surgery is not much fun and can be risky. I always advise cervical disc herniation patients (that qualify medically for the DRX9000c) to consider non-surgical consider disc decompression first before going under the knife.

Here’s the deal…If you have cervical surgical fusion will will be disqualified from ever trying the DRX9000c. If you try disc decompression first and it does not help, you can still have surgery. Heck…you can always have surgery.

Doesn’t it make sense to dry cervical decompression first? I think so.

Anyway…if you live or work near downtown San Francisco…or have the means to stay for a month (I recommend SF Le Meridian Hotel right across the street from us) in the SF Financial District, and have been told you need neck surgery…we would love to meet with you and discuss the treatment options for your neck condition.
