Pinched Nerve in the Low Back?

pinched nerve treatment san francisco
Pinched Lumbar Nerve Root of Sciatic Nerve

We have been providing treatment for low back pain and sciatica in the SF Bay Area for over 20 years now. We use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, massage, motion extension traction, custom exercises, deep tissue laser therapy, and nonsurgical spinal decompression when indicated. During this time we have helped over 5000 patients with low back pain and related disorders.

A primary cause of low back pain and sciatica is a “Pinched Nerve” in the low back. Pinched nerves are generally caused by herniated or bulging discs in the lumbar spine, most commonly at L5-S1.

Nerve tissue is very sensitive to pressure. In fact, just the weight of a pencil erasure on a nerve can alter it’s ability to function by 60% and cause severe pain and dysfunction.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body…it can be the diameter of a quarter at it’s greatest circumference. Bulging discs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and various conditions like “Piriformis Syndrome” can put pressure on the sciatic nerve or nerve roots causing “pinched nerves”.

Typically, a patient will feel various combinations of low back pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling, aching, weakness, and muscle stiffness and spasms that become progressively worse over time. There can also be pinched nerves with no symptoms at all…for a while and then BOOM…when you least expect it lightning strikes. This is fairly common actually, and can be very alarming.

The solution for pinched nerves in the low back depends on the nature and severity of the problem. Conservative chiropractic, massage, laser, and ice are always the first thing we try. That is of course unless the patient is unable to handle it. In rare cases such as this we do laser and ice to try to reduce inflammation and then maybe some muscle stim and light massage.

Spinal decompression with the DRX9000 is also an option in the beginning as it is very safe and gentle. The DRX is designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as bulging and herniated lumbar discs. However, the cost is greater than chiropractic as is the time commitment…so typically we try more conservative chiropractic first.

In any case, many chiropractors that have included disc decompression and deep tissue laser therapy into their protocols (such as us) have become “one stop shops” for pinched nerves due to herniated and bulging spinal discs.

If you or someone you know requires treatment for a pinched nerve in San Francisco, please call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression: How long until I see results with the DRX9000?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 8 years now with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 treats low back pain and sciatica associated with bulging and herniated lumbar discs.

Prior to this we would refer out our herniated disc patients that did not respond to chiropractic or physical therapy to medical doctors for surgical consults.  Some would have surgery, but most would just live with the pain.

But that was then and this is now.  With the DRX9000 we are able to achieve favorable outcomes with a very high percentage of our patients. Sure, there are patients that do not respond but it is rare.

How soon a herniated disc patient starts to feel better from disc decompression treatment is dependent on many factors. Here are some of them:

  1. The nature and severity of the condition. Is it just one herniation or is it multilevel? Is there severe pain, inflammation and muscle guarding?
  2. The age of the patient.
  3. Are there complications such as a scoliosis, short leg, advanced spinal or disc degeneration, fibromyalgia?
  4. The activity level of the patient and primary occupation. It will typically take longer to heal if a patient is performing manual labor, driving for long periods, or sitting/standing all day with minimum breaks.
  5. Is the patient compliant with keeping regular appointments and staying on the treatment plan?
  6. Is the patient getting plenty of sleep and drinking lots of water?
  7. Is the patient under a lot of mental stress?
  8. Is the patient eating the right foods? We recommend eating lots of plant foods as they help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
  9. Everyone heals differently. We are all unique and respond to treatments in our unique way.

So, there you go. Some decompression patients begin to feel better right away and some take a while. Some may even feel more sore in the beginning. It’s just the way it is. The treatment is physical and involves repositioning injured spinal discs, strengthening spinal muscles and ligaments, and teaching the body to work with the spine and discs in a new position.

We recommend wearing a lumbar support as much as you can in between DRX visits and icing frequently throughout the day to reduce inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms.

It does not even matter so much how you feel in the beginning. What matters is how you feel at the end of the treatment. As long as you keep your appointments, do your home care, try to keep a positive attitude, drink lots of water, and eat right, you give yourself an excellent chance for becoming another nonsurgical spinal decompression  success story.

The time to start spinal decompression is always NOW!

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been offering spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 8 years now. During this time we have performed over 15,000 spinal decompression sessions…so we know a little bit about what works.

One thing we have figured out is that there will never be a perfect time to start. There will always be vacations, prior commitments, kids, work, things you need to start and things you need to finish…life!

Sure, DRX9000 decompression therapy is a commitment…it’s 20 one hour sessions done in 6-8 weeks or more. But heck…the reason you are considering doing it is because low back pain, sciatica, or neck pain is interfering with your life. You have been diagnosed with some sort of neurovascular compression syndrome such as a herniated or bulging disc in the cervical or lumbar spine.  So whatever you are doing you are most likely doing it in pain and are unable to fully enjoy what life has to offer.

This is why i say that the time to start spinal decompression is always NOW.

Why not start the process of repairing your back now so you can get your life back?

At our spinal decompression center in San Francisco we try to make the process as easy as possible. We reserve the DRX9000 for you so there is no waiting. We can perform the entire treatment in around 50 minutes so you do not get trapped for hours like other clinics. And…we can work with your busy schedule to get you started even if it means you can only do a few sessions per week. It can be easy to start…really.

We have found that those that make decompression happen seem to get the best results. They are mentally prepared for a favorable outcome…they expect it. They are taking charge and not letting the normal stresses of life interfere with their decision. And we are right there with them making sure the process is a smooth ride.

Hey…the Holidays are a perfect time to start disc decompression therapy. Things slow down, we have space on the decompression machine, and it’s a great way to power into the New Year.

Anyway…we hope you are enjoying the season and we look forward to seeing you soon 🙂

To schedule an appointment at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

How do you know if your spinal decompression is working?

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for 8 years now. During this time we have performed over 20,000 decompression treatments to thousands of patients. We were the first to offer the DRX9000 in San Francisco.

The protocol for the DRX9000 is 20 sessions. The recommended treatment is 5x for 2 weeks, 3x for 2 weeks, and 2x for 2 weeks. When they conduct research this is what they do.

In reality, not all herniated or bulging disc patients can adhere to this treatment protocol due to family, work or school schedules. And honestly, sometimes we think the treatment might be too much for someone to handle. So…we treat each patient on an individual basis, sometime starting at only 2-3 times per week.

How do we know the 20 spinal decompression sessions will be enough?

We don’t…sometimes it takes more…but it rarely takes less. Sure, if you are a young adult (under 25 years old) and have a single level disc herniation, say at L5-S1, and an otherwise healthy spine, we may recommend 15 sessions.  Other than this scenario, we usually do 20-26 sessions.

In our experience it’s best to complete the program…even if you are feeling better after say 10 sessions. It’s kind of like when you take antibiotics…you feel better before the problem is fixed.

We often have patients that want to only do 10 sessions to see how they feel…but honestly…even if you are not feeling results, it does not mean the decompression therapy is not working. Some of our most dramatic results have happened at the end of treatment…in the last 5 sessions…and the results have lasted years.

And you should never stop after 10 sessions if you are feeling better…because you may risk a relapse.

What we recommend is deciding before you start that you are going to complete the program. Sure, we can split your payments up to make them more affordable…but don’t jeopardize your potential outcome by doing too little…that just does not make sense.

We will do it if you want…but we recommend you “stay the course”.  Because if you do the results will be more permanent. And we have the experience to know. We have seen patients that have done partial treatment get partial results. We we want this to be life changing and long lasting…and so should you!

When to Consider Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing natural solutions for low back pain and sciatica in San Francisco for over 20 years now.  About 8 years ago we began to incorporate nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into our treatment protocols. The results have been outstanding.

Prior to spinal decompression we would have to refer out patients that did not respond to our treatment, which consisted of chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release, deep tissue laser, acupuncture, custom exercises, yoga, and traction. We also consulted our chronic back pain patients on plant based nutrition and meditation.

It sounds like a lot…but sometimes it just was not enough and we would need to refer out for surgical consultation and possible back surgery.

But that was pre-spinal decompression. We still have all the tools at our disposal that we used to have, but we also have the DRX9000 spinal decompression system.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and facet syndrome, without drugs or surgery.

The machine is able to isolate of a specific spinal disc, say L5-S1 (the most commonly treated) and initiate healing. Spinal decompression seeks to enlarge the disc space, elongate the spine, stretch and strengthen the spinal muscles and ligaments, rehydrate the injured disc, and re-position the herniated disc fragments back where they belong and off the spinal cord and nerves. It sounds like a lot, but that’s how it works.

Does it work every time? NO…nothing does…just most of the time.

Even in the unlikely event  nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 fails to deliver you are still left whole and can explore other treatment options. If you have spinal surgery and pieces of disc are cut away or the spine is fused, you are not left whole and may be disqualified from ever trying decompression therapy. This is why we recommend trying the DRX9000 first.

You should consider spinal decompression therapy if you have low back pain, sciatica, leg weakness, chronic back pain, hip pain, and have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc (or other conditions listed above) that are not responding to conventional back pain treatments.

Sure, cortisone injections may make you feel better temporarily…but the long term effects can be deadly with repeated use. Spinal decompression addresses the cause and does it naturally. Those in the know, including medical doctors, physical therapist, and professional athletes are using spinal decompression as a tool to avoid surgery and stay healthy…and you can too.

To find out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression in San Francisco, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation. Chances are you will be glad you did 🙂

Spinal Decompression: Back Surgery without the Surgery

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression Therapy

We have been providing treatment for bulging and herniated discs in San Francisco for over 20 years now. About 8 years ago we began to incorporate spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into our treatment protocols. Prior to this, we would have to refer out for surgical consultation if the patient did not respond to chiropractic care or physical therapy. There just was not a conservative “next step”…now there is.

Nonsurgical spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging lumbar and cervical discs, without surgery. Spinal decompression therapy can also help conditions such as degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, and spinal stenosis.

We like to say that spinal decompression is like back surgery without the surgery. The end result is the same…there is no more pressure or less pressure on the spinal nerve structures that are causing the back or neck pain.

Spinal decompression machines such as the DRX9000 are able to enlarge the disc space, elongate the spine, re-position the injured spinal disc (off the nerve and spinal cord), re-hydrate the disc, strengthen the spinal muscles and ligaments, and reduce pain levels.

Does the spinal decompression machine accomplish this every time?

NO…just most of the time. And there are varying levels of outcomes. Some get completely better, some a little better, and most just a lot better than they were.

Do spinal decompression results last?

YES…we have hundreds of patients that still maintain results achieved years ago…but they take care of their spines…and some do ongoing DRX care 4-6 times per year.

Here’s the deal…in my opinion (which is biased of course) you can always do surgery. Why not try spinal decompression first (if you qualify medically)? It’s safe. It’s gentle. And it’s effective. Maybe you don’t need surgery.

And here is something to consider. If you have a fusion surgery or rods or cement or anything permanent done to your spine…you will forever be disqualified from spinal decompression therapy. And that is scary.

Spinal Decompression for Sciatica

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been providing treatment for Sciatica in San Francisco for over 20 years now. The primary causes of sciatica are bulging and herniated lumbar discs. During this time we have mostly used chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, massage, deep tissue laser, and custom exercises.

About 8 years ago we began to incorporate spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is a machine that is designed and built to provide nonsurgical relief from neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging lumbar discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, and spinal stenosis.

The results have been outstanding.

We also provide cervical decompression therapy with the DRX9000c.

Often times, sciatica patients will not respond to chiropractic care, physical therapy, cortisone, or pain medication. The sciatica symptoms resulting from the herniated discs can cause severe back pain and disability. Some patient are almost to sore and sensitive to even touch.

This is when spinal decompression makes the most amount of sense. Patients can be too sore to have chiropractic or physical therapy but they can handle decompression therapy. Typically, after  several sessions the inflammation starts to subside and the sciatica symptoms begin to abate….which is very nice.

Spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 takes about an hour for each session. The average sciatica patient requires about 2o sessions to achieve a favorable outcome.

We incorporate muscle stimulation, ice, exercise, and some chiropractic if indicated and tolerated. We will even apply deep tissue laser and advanced soft tissue methods such as ART and Graston as needed. The treatment is very comprehensive.

Not everyone qualifies for spinal decompression. If you have advanced spinal degeneration or osteoporosis, a previous spinal fusion, severe scoliosis, aortic aneurism, multiple sclerosis, to name a few, you may not qualify.

If you are interested in finding out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Cervical Decompression with the DRX9000c

drx9000c san francisco
DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

We have been providing treatment in San Francisco for herniated discs in the neck for over 20 years now. About 8 years ago we began to incorporate nonsurgical cervical decompression with the DRX9000c into the mix.

Since then, cervical decompression has become the gold standard for the nonsurgical treatment of neurovascular compression syndromes such as bulging and herniated cervical discs, cervical stenosis, disc degeneration, and facet syndrome.

Often times,  patients are scheduled for risky neck surgery when they decide to try the DRX9000c first at the recommendation of their medical doctor. Other times, we discover the cervical disc herniation when we send an unresponsive chiropractic patient out for an MRI. Some patients find us while conducting their own research for nonsurgical drug-less options for neck pain, which may or may not be radiating into the arms and hands.

Neck pain that radiates into the upper extremities can also lead to weakness up grip strength and disability. It’s best to seek treatment right away before it gets worse.

We have seen miracles at our spinal decompression clinic with the DRX9000c. Most recently,  a dentists that was having to use a wheel chair and could not work, is now walking on his own and reports a 70% recovery at about the half way point.

While cervical decompression is not a Magic Bullet…it is the most advanced technology in the marketplace today for herniated and bulging discs.

Not all patients qualify medically for the DRX9000c. The best thing to do if you feel you are a candidate is to find a spinal decompression doctor near you.

If you live or work near downtown San Francisco you can visit us at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center. Simply call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation and demonstration of the DRX9000c.

Spinal Decompression and Deep Tissue Laser Therapy for Herniated Discs

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for 20 years now. About 7 years ago we began to incorporate nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into the mix. A few years later we added cold laser therapy, and more recently, Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy.

Both spinal decompression and deep tissue laser therapy are considered major advancements in the nonsurgical treatment of herniated and bulging discs. We often use both together to achieve favorable outcomes…even with the most difficult of cases.

Classic herniated disc symptoms such as sciatica, low back pain, leg pain, numbness and tingling, leg weakness, arm pain, loss of grip strength, neck pain, and numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, all, more often than not,  respond favorably to decompression therapy and therapeutic pain laser or both.

The spinal decompression we use to treat disc herniations in the neck is the DRX9000c. It is actually connected to the DRX9000. The deep tissue laser we use is the LiteCure LCT-1000. A state-of-the-art medical device that is taking the world by storm.

The beauty of these technologies is they can be used on most people. They are very gentle and safe. Even when a patient is unable to handle exercise, chiropractic, or physical therapy…they can always handle laser, and often handle spinal decompression.

What this does is enable us to initiate treatment right away so we can start lowering pain and inflammation levels…often times when nothing is working…even pain medications.

Spinal decompression and deep tissue therapeutic laser with the LCT-1000 may just be the answer you are looking for.

If you live or work near downtown San Francisco you can visit us. If you don’t, I recommend you do a Google search for DRX9000, DRX9000c (if cervical) and LiteCure Deep Tissue Laser, in your area. Example “DRX9000 San Francisco”.

If you would like a complimentary consultation at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…please call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post.

Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been offering spinal decompression services in San Francisco for about 8 years now. During this time we have performed over 15,000 spinal decompression treatments to the neck and low back…so we have a nice sampling to draw certain conclusions from.

One of the first things many potential spinal decompression patients ask is “does spinal decompression hurt?”…and you can’ really blame them…most are already in a lot of pain and really don’t want to have the injured spinal disc pulled on if it is going to hurt.

Well…the good news is that decompression therapy with machines like the DRX9000 are designed and built for maximum patient comfort. In fact…most people fall asleep during the spinal decompression treatments, which last about 30 minutes.

So…to directly answer the question “Is spinal decompression painful?”

I would say NO!…most of the time.

Sure…there are situations where people get sore…sometimes real sore…but “real sore” is rare.  As spinal decompression doctors we expect that patients will get sore…after-all, the treatment is physical. Because of this we use muscle stimulation and ice right after the decompression treatments to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms. We also instruct the patients on how to apply ice throughout the day.

We have real specific do’s and dont’s that allow for maximum healing.

And when patients do get sore…it’s usually nothing more than the soreness you would get if you did a new exercise. Because in actuality, it’s very similar. Part of the soreness some people get after decompression is because the muscle are now working with the spine and disc in a new position…so they have to work a little different…because of this they can get sore. Ice reduces the likelihood of the soreness interfering with the treatment.

Bottom Line: Most herniated disc patients look forward to their spinal decompression therapy. The listen to music, sleep, relax, and generally get better.

So there you go. Don’t let the possibility of soreness from decompression therapy stop you from doing it. Because chances are, it will be a non event.
