Treatment For Lumbar Disc Herniation in San Francisco

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing nonsurgical treatment for lumbar disc herniation in downtown San Francisco for over 22 years.

Believe it or not, there are many medical doctors and people who find out they have a disc herniation who think that back surgery is the best or only option.

First of all, there is often no connection between the low back pain or sciatica that a patient may be experiencing and the herniated disc. In fact, over 50% of the general population is estimated to have an asymptomatic bulging or herniated disc.  That’s right…you can have a bulging or herniated disc and not even know it.

Please read this excellent article from Chiro-Trust.org entitled The Mysteries Of Low Back Pain for updated research and statistics on low back pain and herniated discs.

Sure, there are patients that have a herniated disc that have severe pain and loss of function…but that does not automatically mean they should rush and have back surgery like many doctors recommend. Medical emergencies are very rare when it comes to back surgery. In fact, many problems heal on their own.

So, what should you do if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc in the lumbar spine? Well…I would not run and have surgery. Chiropractic is a very effective treatment option and it is safe and gentle…despite what some doctors may tell you. You can find mounds of research over at Chiro-Trust.org to support this point of veiw.

In the event that chiropractic fails to deliver desired results then we have a “next step”…Nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is designed and built to treat bulging and herniated discs in the low back without surgery. The results are outstanding.

For sure you want to make sure you find a chiropractor that has lots of experience treating herniated discs with spinal decompression. We were the first to offer spinal decompression with the DRX9000 in San Francisco and we have the most experience.

Our sister clinic, Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. has medical doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and advanced diagnostic equipment which enables us to manage the most difficult of cases.

To find out if you are a candidate for herniated disc treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Hand Pain and Herniated Disc in The Neck

herniated disc treatment san francisco
Is it Really CTS?

We have been providing treatment for hand pain in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Hand pain is very common in people that spend the majority of their day sitting at a desk in front of a computer…like most of our patients.

When it comes to hand pain treatment the source of the pain is not always in the hand. In fact, more often than not the source of the arm or hand pain is from pinched nerves in the neck. That’s right, pinched nerves in the neck can cause the same type of hand pain that pinched nerves in the hand or wrist can cause (carpal tunnel syndrome).

This is why it’s so important for a doctor to examine the neck to the finger tips when a patient presents with carpal tunnel symptoms such as hand pain.

The primary cause of pinched nerves in the neck is a herniated or bulging cervical disc.

Chiropractors have great success treating pinched nerves in the neck with adjustments, massage, exercise and other non-invasive treatments such as deep tissue laser and Active Release Techniques (ART).

In the unlikely event that chiropractic fails to deliver desired results for hand pain due to a herniated disc, then nonsurgical cervical decompression is considered for the neck.

At our clinic we will often incorporate cervical decompression with the DRX9000c and chiropractic adjustments. This can work extremely well.

We also have a medical team and physical therapy team for difficult cases.

So, if you are suffering with neck, arm, shoulder, elbow, or hand pain, you should probably visit a chiropractor that has expertise in CTS treatment and repetitive stress injuries. And if they have a cervical spinal decompression machine that’s even better.

To find out if you are a candidate for hand pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression Maintenance Care

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Over the past 10 years or so we have helped thousands of herniated cervical and lumbar disc patients return to more active lifestyles with the DRX9000. Many have been able to avoid back or neck surgery as well.

Sure, there are always some that do not respond favorably to decompression therapy but they are the minority. What typically happens is that patients end up a lot better than they were and are glad they did the treatment. Some have a complete resolution of symptoms.

As we near the end of the spinal decompression protocol, which is typically around 20 sessions performed over a 6-8 week period, we discuss with the patient the option of continuing on with some sort of ongoing maintenance plan. About 50% choose to do so.

Is DRX9000 spinal decompression maintenance necessary? In some cases YES, in other cases we just don’t know. When we just don’t know, we recommend that our patients listen to their body and call for a decompression session “as needed”. This seems to work very well.

Some patients never need the decompression machine again and choose to keep their spine healthy with chiropractic, exercise, stretching, Yoga or Pilates.

So, if we feel you need cervical or lumbar spinal decompression maintenance care, we will tell you. If not, we will teach you how to take care of your new back or neck so that the results last.

The conditions that respond best to cervical or lumbar spinal decompression therapy are bulging or herniated disc in the neck or low back. Degenerative disc disease, Spinal Stenosis, Facet Syndrome, and Failed Back Surgery cases also respond well.

Not all patients can qualify medically for decompression therapy. The best thing to do is research online, find a spinal decompression doctor near you with lots of experience (this matters most) and make an appointment to find out if you are a good candidate.

If you live or work near the San Francisco Financial District, or have the ability to stay for a month or two, you can see us.

To schedule an appointment at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225.

Spinal Decompression or Back Surgery for a Herniated Disc?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Many herniated disc patients are told they need back surgery. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. How do they know for sure?

Well, welcome to the life of a spinal decompression doctor. This is what we are dealing with every day. I would like to give you my take on the situation.

In my opinion, a herniated disc patient should NOT rush to have back surgery. Because once they do, in many cases, the will be permanently disqualified from ever trying nonsurgical spinal decompression.

In addition, many herniated discs will repair naturally in time. In fact, they say that more people than not are actually walking around with bulging and herniated discs and do not even know they have them…and never will. Not all patients with a herniated disc in the low back experience low back pain or sciatica.

That’s right, the majority of lumbar disc herniations do not even cause symptoms.

But in certain cases, the disc is herniated in such a way that the body is unable to re-position it naturally or heal it such that it does not interfere with a person’s life. In situations like this conservative chiropractic care can be very effective.

There is however a subset of all herniated and bulging disc patients that do not respond to chiropractic, drugs, cortisone, physical therapy or anything for that matter. Some of these patients are suffering daily with sever low back pain and sciatica. many are unable to sleep and end up taking various kinds of medications day in and day out. Life is miserable.

These are the type of back pain patients that have a tendency to want to have surgery…they will try anything. In my clinical experience this type of patient represents about 10-15% of all herniated disc patients and is still a lot of people.

These are the perfect candidates for spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000 but there are many fine decompression systems out there.

Unless it is a medical emergency (rare) or you are disqualified from decompression therapy (rare), I recommend a course of spinal decompression to see if a patient will respond. Disc decompression is very safe and gentle. It takes about 6 weeks (20 sessions) to work through the protocol and make a determination if the treatment was successful.

If the DRX9000 does not achieve a favorable outcome and desired result you are still whole and able to pursue all other treatment options including back surgery.

If you have a spinal fusion you can never try decompression. So, why not try decompression first?

So there you go…that’s my 2 cents for what it’s worth. I have helped hundreds of herniated disc patients avoid surgery…the next one could be YOU!

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression and L5-S1 Disc Herniation

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression in San Francisco for over 10 years.

The most common disc to herniate in the lumbar spine is the L5-S1 Disc. The L5-S1 disc is the very last disc in the spine and is positioned between the L5 lumbar vertebrae and the Sacrum in the L5-S1 disc space.

The reason this disc is more prone to disc bulges and herniation is because it takes on more stress than the other spinal discs because it is the last one at the base of the spine.

Because of this,  the majority of the patients we treat with spinal decompression therapy have L5-S1 disc herniations.

For the most part, a disc herniation will develop slowly over time as part of a degenerative process that will include the surrounding bone and ligaments. The disc will lose height, water content and flexibility.

As this process unfolds the outer containment walls of the disc give way to the gelatinous center of the disc which pushes out onto the nerves and spinal cord resulting in pain and dysfunction. Sometimes sciatica develops, which is pain in the leg/s.

In any case, spinal decompression is often able to achieve favorable outcomes even in the worst of cases. A favorable outcome can be anything from avoiding surgery to a complete resolution of the problem. In rare cases disc decompression does nothing to help. Just know…this is the exception and not the rule.

If you have been diagnosed with an L5-Si lumbar disc herniation or any other kind of herniation, disc bulge, degenerative disc disease, or facet syndrome…you may be a candidate for disc decompression with the DRX9000.

We have onsite digital x-ray and advanced diagnostic equipment that we can use to quantify and monitor your progress.

So, if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc in the lumbar or cervical spine and are experiencing neck, low back, arm or leg pain…you may be a candidate for spinal decompression and physical medicine.

Spinal Decompression and Failed Back Surgery

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 10 years now. During this time we have helped thousands of herniated discs patients return to more normal lives. We have also assisted in preventing hundreds of low back surgeries.

Every now and then a patient that has had previous back surgery presents for spinal decompression treatment. They had the back surgery and either the symptoms got worse or did not improve…or did not improve much.

Unfortunately, if the back surgery was a spinal fusion, there is nothing we can do. Patients with spinal fusion surgeries are permanently disqualified from spinal decompression.

If the surgery was a discectomy, then there is hope. In fact, we have helped dozens of patients over the past 10 years with spinal decompression that have had failed discectomy back surgery.

This is good news for those who may have been told they have no other treatment options for their chronic low back pain or sciatica.

Sure, we may do the treatment and it does not help…but that is not likely.

And the decompression therapy is very safe and gentle.

We also have a team of medical doctors and physical therapists that can participate in the treatment process, increasing the odds of a favorable outcome.

So, yes…if you have failed surgery you still may be a candidate for spinal decompression on the DRX9000.

To find out if you qualify medically please call 415-392-2225 and make an appointment with one of our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Doctors. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Chronic Low Back Pain Treatment with Spinal Decompression

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing chronic low back pain treatment  in San Francisco for over 22 years now in the Financial District.

Chronic low back pain is pain in the lumbar spine that has persisted for over 90 days. The #1 predisposing factor for chronic low back pain is previous back pain. That’s right, if you now have back pain and you have had it before, you are at a high risk to develop chronic back pain.

So what can be done?

Well…first you need to find out what is causing your low back pain. Do you have leg pain (sciatica) also? Is there numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs or feet? Is there night pain?

A chiropractor is a great place to start the discovery process. X-rays may be indicated or even an MRI if a herniated or bulging disc is suspected.

Typically, we will first try a course of chiropractic treatment first or physical therapy. If chiropractic fails to deliver results we will consider spinal decompression with the DRX9000.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to help problems such as chronic low back pain or sciatica that are caused by herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, or spinal stenosis.

A standard course of treatment is 20 sessions over a 6-8 week period. Results are outstanding and side effects are minimal.

Sure, spinal decompression may not help you…but that is the exception and not the rule. In the event disc decompression therapy fails to deliver you are still whole and can pursue other treatment options, even surgery.

If you have surgery first you may be permanently disqualified from ever trying spinal decompression and there are risks to consider as well.

So…if you are suffering with chronic low back pain and are looking for answers, you may have just found some.

Are you in need of Chronic Low Back Pain Treatment? To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression Maintenance Care

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression in San Francisco for around 10 years now. The machine we use is the DRX9000. Prior to this, patients that did not respond favorably to chiropractic care were referred for surgical consultation.

Over the past 10 years we have helped thousands of herniated disc patients return to more normal lives and prevent back surgery.

About half of our spinal decompression patients continue on with maintenance care. They do this because they are happy with the results and wish to maintain them. The frequency of maintenance care varies from once every 3 months to around once per month in advanced cases.

Your spinal decompression doctor will usually have a good idea of what you need from how you respond to the initial intensive care, which is 20 visits over a 6 week period.

As far as what to expect from decompression therapy…some report a complete resolution of their low back pain or sciatica. A small minority report no change at all. And everyone else reports they are much better than they were and glad they did the treatment.

Sure, some patients do not respond to decompression…it’s just the way it is. But you know what? They are still whole and can pursue other treatment options.

If you have surgery you may be disqualified from decompression…so why not try spinal decompression first?

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression or Chiropractic?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing chiropractic and spinal decompression services in San Francisco for over 20 years in the Financial District.

Often times patients present to our clinic with back or neck pain related to a herniated disc and say they are interested in nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 or DRX9000c.

This is great, but it may not make the most sense. The reason I say this is that pinched nerves due to bulging or herniated discs respond favorably to conventional chiropractic care, which is cheaper and less of a time commitment than disc decompression.

Sure, a certain percentage of herniated disc patients will not respond to chiropractic and will end up on the decompression machine…but we find it works best when we try chiropractic first.

Some patients do not want to try chiropractic for various reasons and we will honor their wishes and initiate decompression. Some patients have already tried chiropractic without favorable results so we go right to decompression. And sometimes we do both chiropractic and decompression together.

All cases are different. When you have as much experience as we do treating lumbar and cervical disc herniations non-surgically, you get good at mixing and matching therapies. We also incorporate acupuncture, physical therapy, and deep tissue laser as needed into the mix and the results are outstanding.

So, if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc and are wondering if you should try chiropractic or spinal decompression, why not go to a chiropractor that does both and has lots of experience. Chances are you will be glad you did 🙂
